H.E. Venerable Thartse Khen Rinpoche was born on an auspicious day in the year 1968 and is the grand nephew of H.E. Chogyal Trichen Rinpoche.
At the age of eight, he was ordained as a monk in Mustang. The Sakya's Ngor tradition has four palaces (Ladrang) namely Luding, Thartse, Phende and Khangsar. At the age of 13, Rinpoche was officially enthroned by H.H. Sakya Trizin and become H.E. Thartse Shadrung. As such, he became the throne holder of Thartse palace.
As Rinpoche grew older, he went to Puruwala's Sakya Institute to study the Buddhadharma in Philosophy, debate etc for seven years and studied under H.E. Khenchen Appey Rinpoche and H.E. Khenchen Kunga Wangchuk Rinpoche. He went to Sakya College to further his higher studies. His Eminence Rinpoche also completed many major retreats in the 4 Armed Vajrapani, Mahavairocana, White Tara, Hevajra, etc.
In 1999, Rinpoche established a center in Taipei. There, he gave teachings on four common foundations, Guru yoga 50 Stanzas, Bodhisattva Caryavatara, Triple Visions, and Naljorma teaching.
In 2001, H.E. Thartse Shadrung Ngawang Sonam Choden was conferred the Thartse Seal by H.H. Dalai Lama and H.H. Sakya Trizin and enthroned as the 77th Ngor Monastery Throne Holder in Ngor Ewam Choden. He is now known as H.E. Thartse Khen Rinpoche.
